Two weeks on from Storm Éowyn which, among many other things, destroyed Connacht GAA’s Air Dome in Bekan, there’s positive news regarding the restructuring of the facility.
Connacht GAA Secretary John Prenty told Midwest Radio this morning that back in 2019, many people had doubts that the original dome would work in the hours before its official opening. His message now is that if people wait another 6-10 months, they’ll see a new dome in its place.
With modern technology, he says that new avenues of construction are being explored which would help in storm prevention – like putting floodlights into the ground.
While meetings are taking place with insurers and engineers to work out how the new structure will look, the show must go on at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence.
This evening, the playing surface of the Air Dome will be back in action, while the second astro turf pitch will also be available following storm damage.
The intervarsity camogie championships will see some finals played on the dome surface this weekend, so it’s still ‘all systems go’ in Bekan.
Mr. Prenty spoke to Rian Bailey on the Tommy Marren Show this morning, and gave an update on facilities at the Centre of Excellence:
