The Mayo Schoolboys/girls and youths AFL had its under 16 Girls side in action in Abbvie United Park, Westport on Saturday at midday. South Belfast were their opposition in the SFAI Inter League Cup Final and what a game it was to be.

Mayo defended stoically against the strong wind in the first half with Mayo ‘keeper Lauren Cusack bringing off a couple excellent saves to enable Mayo to make it to half-time scoreless. South Belfast got a brace of rather soft goals at the start of the 2nd half before an Aoibhinn Mc Namara penalty for a foul on Sophie O Donnell halved the deficit. A brilliant Katie Hughes corner in the last minute tied the game up the ball seemingly going straight in from the corner.

Mayo went ahead in the first period of extra time through Siofra Mc Guinness but were pegged back almost immediately. 3-3 and then to penalties with Mayo going first. Nerves of steel were exhibited by Grace Carroll, Katie Hughes, Aoibhinn Mc Namara, Siofra Mc Guinness and Ella Mc Loughlin as they all emphatically dispatched their spot-kicks to leave Mayo winners 5-3.
