After trailing by two points at half time Mayo produced a sensational second half display to see off Monaghan by 22 points in round 1 of the Nicky Rackard Cup.

Mayo were without three key personnel today in Daniel Huane, Sean Kenny and Conall Hession but were still highly fancied to win with ease having defeated the Farney men by 26 points in the league back in early February.

However, weather conditions played a big factor in the first half and Monaghan had the advantage of the strong breeze and if it weren’t for poor shooting would have been further ahead in that first half.

Mayo outscored their opponents by 24 points in the second half but will face a much tougher assignment next weekend when they travel to Letterkenny to take on Donegal in Round 2.
