Paul Conroy lead the line with 0-7, including three two-pointers, with one coming late on to keep Galway ahead.
Liam O’Conghaile hit the insurance point with a minute to go.
Mayo had chances late on to force extra time, with Enda Hession’s goal chance in the dying minutes saved by Connor Gleeson.
Mayo now enter the All Ireland group stage with Tyrone, Cavan and the Ulster champions – either Donegal or Armagh.
Galway will go with the Ulster runners-up along with Dublin and Derry.
