Cavan have caused a great upset in Castlebar this afternoon, beating Mayo by three in their opening All Ireland Senior Football Championship meeting.
10 different scorers and a second half goal from Gerard Smith inspired Raymond Galligan’s side to a first championship win over Mayo since 1948.
After a disappointing Mayo performance, a last minute consolation goal from Aidan O’Shea put a better reflection on the scoreline, but Cavan already had the major damage done.
Ryan O’Donoghue (0-5) and Stephen Coen (0-4) scored well for Mayo, while Cavan were aided by four points each from Oisin Kiernan and Cormac O’Reilly.
Next up for Mayo is an away trip to Tyrone on Saturday May 31, against Tyrone.
