David Cawley has retired from professional football.
The Ballina native played with Sligo Rovers for most of his career, spending 10 seasons at the club. During his time in Sligo he won the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division in 2012, the FAI Cup in 2013, and the 2014 Setanta Sports Cup.
Starting out with Ballina Town, Cawley spent four seasons with Ipswich Town, during which he was managed by Roy Keane.
He left England to join Sligo Rovers, and later played for St. Pat’s, Galway United and most recently Finn Harps.
In a statement on social media, David said:
“After weeks of reflection, I’ve decided that the time has come to retire from professional football.
“It’s a day I’ve often dreaded, having spent most of my life in this great game – but looking back now, I just feel incredibly grateful.
“From the injuries and setbacks to the endless travel, big European nights, a few memorable wins and plenty of tough losses – it’s all of these moments that I’ll carry with me and cherish for the rest of my life.
“A massive thank you to my family, my wife, my kids, close friends, and everyone who has supported me on this journey. Your support has never gone unnoticed.
“Football has been a massive part of my life and it will continue to be, so for now, my full focus is helping the next generation of boys and girls chase their dreams.
“Thank you, DC.”
