My deepest condolences to Nancy and all the Fitzgerald family on the passing of Willie. He truly was one of the finest ambassadors for the Mayo Gaels GAA Club that he loved with such a passion down through the decades. I always associate him with another Mayo Abbey legend, Tommie Duggan, who died in 2021. I don’t think I ever covered a match in Mayo Abbey that I did not receive the warmest handshake from those two men when they were on the gate. Our family has so many relations in Mayo Abbey parish and I have always had an abiding fondness for these wonderful people who are at the heart and soul of Mayo. (The county is even named after this area!). His beloved Mayo Gaels flag was draped on the coffin in Balla this evening as I shared memories with my old school pal and absolute gentleman, Alan Brett. We both knew a true legend of the club had crossed to the Farside Banks of Jordan. Rest in gentle peace, Willie, and thank you for your incredible friendship to so many throughout your long life. Always Mayo!
