We are saddened by the sad news last Tuesday evening of Seamus ‘ loss to your lives and to the lives of all he touched through his contribution as a psychiatric nurse, Assistant Director of Nursing and his leadership roles in GAA.
It is clear that his impact in both these roles was significant both above and below the radar.

As a committed Mayo Gaa Supporter i met Seamus many times during his time as Chairman. He was very committed professional man and a good friend. He fought a very difficult illness with bravery and courage. RIP Seamus. Maigheo abu.

We were so shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Seamus’s passing.
We were blessed to get to know Seamus and Marie during our time running The Cross Bar. They were truly a beautiful couple, and it was a privilege to have known them.
GAA was one of Seamus’s great passions, but whenever he escaped to their holiday home in Cabaun, we had the opportunity to see another side of him. Seamus was such a kind, gentle man with a wonderful sense of humour. He enjoyed all the banter and was always well able to join in the craic, bringing warmth and laughter wherever he went.
Words cannot adequately express how saddened we are by his passing. Seamus will be remembered with great fondness and affection by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
To his beloved wife Marie, his children Shona and Evan, and his treasured grandchildren, sisters and extended family, we extend our sincerest and heartfelt condolences. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this profoundly difficult time.

Seamus is a great loss to his family and to the GAA community. He led Mayo GAA with distinction and yet was always available to guide and advise the clubs of the county. The news of the passing of Seamus was relayed to me by son Tommy who resides in the grand county of Laois. It came as such a shock. I had spoken to Seamus on the phone since Mayo’s historic win on July 26, a day that will live long in the memory of all of us proud Mayo followers.
There is nothing in the world like the GAA ‘family’ that always ‘park’ county rivalries in times of grief and sadness. What warn and appreciative messages have been posted by our neighbouring counties in the last day. “It was fitting that Seamus was at the helm in July on one of the greatest ever days in Irish sport” – Paul Bellew, chairperson of Galway GAA. “The 26th of July was the last day I talked to Seamus in person and I am sure it was one of the proudest days of his life as his beloved Mayo were crowned All Ireland Senior Champions” – Brian Carroll, chairperson of Roscommon GAA. There are so many lovely tributes as well from Sligo and Leitrim and from Dublin and Kerry, Cavan, Kilkenny, Clare, Cork, and so many other counties.
Seamus was at the helm on the greatest day in the history of Mayo GAA and it is hard to believe that quite a few people who were in Croke Park on July 26 are no longer with us. (That includes my friend Cliff Fee of The Killarneys ballad group from Kerry who was such a gentleman and who died the Thursday after the match).My sincere condolences to his wife Marie and family and friends at this very sad time.

He showed genuine care and understanding to those living with mental illness, treating them with dignity, patience and respect. He was a true professional, always kind and totally confidential. It takes a special person to provide such dedicated care and meaningful service.
May you his family find comfort in knowing what a positive difference he made to others.

Seamus was a dedicated passionate and committed Mayo GAA man and it was very fitting that he was so instrumental in overseeing the Sam Maguire return to Mayo after 75 years. We are all shocked and saddened in Kiltane GAA Club on hearing of the untimely passing of County Chairman Seamus Tuohy. To his wife Marie, daughter Shona, son Evan relatives and many friends, we offer our heartfelt sympathy at this very sad and difficult time. Seamus brief in Mayo GAA extended far beyond that of being chairman. He was a man of great leadership and vision, a man who wished only the very best for everyone he represented. Such leadership was an inspiration to all within the GAA community. It was only fitting then that such outstanding dedication was rewarded only a number of weeks ago with a first All Ireland senior title after so many years of heartbreak. We would all have hoped and wished that his time to reflect on and celebrate such an outstanding achievement extended far beyond that of two months. That it didn’t will not in any way distract from the fact that one of the most noteworthy All Ireland successes of all time was achieved under his stewardship. At dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.

I have known Seamus as a gentleman, honest and caring. As Chairman of Mayo GAA, he had a way with him that got things done for the good of GAA in Mayo. Sincere sympathy to Marie and family and Brid, Mary, Tommy, Claire and Helen (and also remembering Christina) and the wider Tuohy family on the loss of Seamus. I first encountered Seamus over forty years ago as a member of the fledgling Breaffy athletic club. Seamus was a great athlete and a passionate coach and both an inspiration and someone to be heeded by us younger budding athletes. Himself and his dad Tom gave excellent and dedicated service to Breaffy a/c travelling miles in that yellow estate car to attended training sessions, coaching, track meets, cross countries and sports days all over county Mayo and beyond. Seamus then worked briefly for my dad Vincent before embarking on his career as a psychiatric nurse. I next encountered Seamus as a member of Breaffy community council years later and his passion for that was equal to his passion for athletics. I never encountered him in his GAA role but to reach the heights he did is testament to his dedication and passion for that also, and the one small consolation in his loss is that he got to welcome Sam back to Mayo after a wait longer than his own lifetime. May you rest in peace Seamus and may the memories of a life passionately well lived bring some comfort and consolation to your grieving family.

Seamus was an incredible Assistant Director of Nursing with our team for many years, and he never lost sight of the nursing part of that role. He showed such kindness and compassion to patients and colleagues alike, and was always endeavouring to support staff in gaining skills and experience that would enrich patient care. He was never afraid of a challenge or of advocating for those in need of help and support. He was hugely missed when he retired from his HSE duties and it was heartwarming to see his success in his GAA career. He left an incredible legacy in his nursing career and we will never forget his solidarity, his warmth, his humour, his dedication and his humanity. May he rest in eternal peace.

Seamus devoted so much of his life to Mayo GAA giving outstanding service to Gaelic games throughout the county.

We would like to thank Seamus for his immense devotion, commitment and passion for the GAA in Mayo. His support for clubs, players and volunteers, and his vision for the future of Gaelic games, will leave a lasting legacy across the county.

It was fitting that, after a lifetime of service, Seamus was Chairperson of Mayo GAA when the Sam Maguire Cup finally returned to Mayo in 2026.

There are no words when I heard of Seamus passing. I am heartbroken for you Marie, his daughter Shona and son Evan. His adored grandchildren. I had the privilege of getting to know ye years ago and I do say to myself, I’m privileged to have you all as my friends. Seamus has left a great legacy, he was a wonderful psychiatric nurse and even better when he was in management, everybody was equal to him and he tried to help everybody. It was a sad loss the day he retired. Then he became chairperson of the Mayo GAA, he always achieved what he set out to do in life but no matter what he did his family were always first and he was always proud of them. He loved his animals, horses, sheep, and donkeys, you would see him in a suit during the day and if you called visiting to his house in the evening he would be in wellies and old clothes and you would find him in the stables looking after his cherished animals, but that was Seamus, may you rest in eternal peace with your darling mum and dad and sister. Mass will be offered here in Luton Bedfordshire.
