Noel O’Dowd

Very sorry to hear of Noels passing. As a young couple and young parents Noel was so nice to us in the 80s. His advice was taken on board and we are where we are today due to Noel. He also helped us financially at a time of need which we will never forget. Noel was a lovely gentleman. Also a great Gaa man. RIP Noel and thank you for everything. Condolences also to your wife Mary daughter Deirdre, son Conor, and grandchildren in-laws, neighbours and many friends.

We were so saddened to hear of Noel’s passing and apologies we could not attend his funeral.

We have fond memories of Noel back in the eighties as young farmers starting out and were privileged to have had him as our bank manager in ACC Ballina for many years. A great listener and adviser who always had the interests of farmers at heart. A gentle man and a gentleman. Rest in peace Noel.

I got to know Noel when he joined our club, Ballina Stephenites. I played with him for many years. He was a true friend and loyal team-mate. When he went into management I joined him as a Selector and won county titles in 1985-1987.
When he came back as manager in 1998 I was with him again. When we were runners-up in the All Ireland final in 1999 – what a proud day that was.

I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Noel’s passing today.

I know the battle he faced with such courage, with his wonderful wife Mary by his side every step of the way.

I have so many great memories of Noel with Ballina Stephenites. The county titles in 1985 — our first in 19 years — then ‘87 and ‘98. The Connacht title in ‘98, and those Connacht finals in ‘85 and ‘87 against the great Clann na Gael team who went on to contest 5 All-Ireland finals in a row. And of course, reaching the All-Ireland final and county final in 1999.

Noel gave sterling service to our club and remains our most successful manager. He kept us grounded, motivated us, and always kept us level-headed. He gave me my big chance in championship as an 18-year-old and showed great faith in us.

He was a wonderful man and man-manager, and a father figure to many of us. He was deeply spiritual and always carried his rosary beads in his tracksuit top.

It is a really sad day for us all.

I offer my sincerest condolences to his beloved wife Mary, daughter Deirdre, son Conor, grandchildren Adam, Luke, Tomás and Fiach, son-in-law Tom, daughter-in-law Caroline, his brother Kieran, sisters Doreen and Olive, and all his extended family.
