Deepest condolences to Nellie’s family. I remember going back to Ireland with my mom, who was born up the road from Nellie – Mary Crowley, nee O’Dowd – and visiting Nellie, Jimmy and Anthony. Mom and Nellie would talk for ages! After mom’s passing when I visited Ireland, Nellie would come up to Uncle Michael and offer an invite down for a visit or I would just drop in. There was always plenty of tea and cake! I looked forward to her Christmas cards with a note and will miss them along with her. May she Rest In Peace.

I was delighted to have had the opportunity to FaceTime her in the hospital. Her final words to me were
“Lily I love your hair” she like me always loved to have her hair done.

I have such fond memories of Nellie. I always loved to meet her in the shop, she always had time for a chat. And in years gone when we would meet in Hughes’ house where there would always be more chats and tea. She had time for everyone, I will always remember her for her kindness and humour. I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Nellie. I got to know Nellie during my time working in the shop as a teenager, we had the best chats, she was a great listener and always there to give her wisdom. She carried so much kindness, warmth, and quiet strength and I always admired her resilience in whatever came her way, and I will remember her always for those qualities. I don’t think anyone left Nellie’s home without having tea and cake. A special person I’m so grateful I knew. ❤️ Thinking of all of Nellie’s family, friends and neighbours at this time. Robert and I are deeply saddened to hear of Aunty Nellie’s death. It was not unexpected, yet marks the passing of the last of Mum’s siblings as Nellie joins her sisters Mary and Nora, brother Jimmy and her parents, my grandmother (‘Na’) and the grandfather I never had the opportunity to meet.
My condolences to all Nellie’s remaining family and her friends.
She will be very much missed. Nellie had an encyclopedic knowledge of the local area and seemed to know everybody.
She loved a cup of tea and a chat, and her sense of fun and enthusiasm for life were well known.
My sincere thanks go to my cousin Ann Meaney who went above and beyond in looking after Nellie; to her neighbour and friend Ann Davey who provided exceptional care and attention: to the community nurses Therese and Helen who visited Nellie and provided every possible support and comfort, to the wonderful caring staff at Ballina Hospital, and to all Nellie’s many friends and neighbours who provided companionship and practical support, not only recently, but over many years.
Aunty Nellie was a strong, feisty lady, always generous, thoughtful and caring.
We are relieved that she is now at peace, but we will miss her.
