Michael was the heart of the FET Centre on Cathedral Road.

His impact on the staff and our learners cannot be overstated. His kindness and generosity were evident every morning in his ritual of greeting every student and staff member by name. Not just those on his own course, but on every course within the centre.

Staff and students spent time today sharing stories and memories of Michael. Everyone recalled how he took time to make people feel welcome and at ease when they first arrived. We spoke of his many successes, and the lasting positive impact he had on hundreds of students throughout the county, the country, and beyond. We remembered his sense of humour, his love of animals, and his love of music.

Throughout the day, past learners and colleagues visited the centre to pay tribute. Each had stories about the difference Michael made to their lives.

Michael was a gift sent by God to his family. However he was also a gift to us his students and friends and work colleagues. We were so lucky to have been the beneficiary of that gift of Michael too. He helped us in every way to achieve exam success and get placements in suitable careers.
When the Balance Sheet of life’s work is presented at Heavens Door Michael will have earned a “distinction” under every category.

My sincerest condolences to Kathleen and all the family on the very sad passing of Michael. He was such a great person, looked after us all. He just couldn’t do enough for us. He always had the kettle on the boil for 7pm for all of us before he started class. He would come in on his weekends off evenings and the extra week before the exams started. He lived for his students, I dont know of any other person who was as dedicated as Michael, he was always just a phone call away.
I have known Michael since 2006, he was the kindest soul I have ever known, he was so proud of all of us in what we achieved. We were all one big family there. Michael’s presence will never be forgotten to anyone who knew him. Definitely an angel for heaven. May Michael rest in peace now in the arms of the angels and to be with his dear mum again.

Michael was a truly kind and generous colleague—a teacher not only to his students but to us who worked with him also. He shared his wisdom generously, always ready with support, a thoughtful word, or a dry, well-timed joke. He always asked after my family with such genuine care.

I’ll always remember our chats about Clare Island and him looking out across the ocean from Mulranny keeping an eye on us.

I am shocked and saddened to hear the sad news of Michael’s passing. I am a past student of Michael and had the pleasure of knowing him. He was so dedicated to his work but also to his family, his sister Kathleen and nieces and nephews who he spoke about all the time. I enjoyed listening to where they were and what they were doing. He had such a great relationship with them all. He also spoke about his brother in-law from Doonbeg, a place close to my heart as my dad was reared near there. He was so kind and generous to my kids when he met them and always asked for them. He always kept touch with us, his last text wising us a happy Easter. Thinking of all Michael’s family and friends at this very sad and difficult time. May his gentle soul rest in heavenly peace.

So sad to hear about his sudden passing. Michael was great teacher and very warmhearted man. He always took care of his students, not only was he a brilliant teacher, but he was looking after us all in many other ways, be it phone calls, chats when needed, looking for jobs to name just a few. When I lost my partner in 2020 Michael and my class took such good care of me, it was like a little family, they left me the space I needed, but were always there. He became a good friend, we had many chats over the years about this and that, our families, his travels and any time something about Germany camu up, he called and told me about it. His biggest love was his mum, his family and the school. My heartfelt condolences to Michael’s sister, her husband and his beloved nieces and nephews. I would love to meet you all some day, as I heard so much about you. So if you ever come through Charlestown call in. The kettle is always boiled. Rest in peace my dear friend, you will be missed and remembered by many. Your mum will be so happy to see you again. Thank you for everything.
