Sincere condolences to Thomas, Ann Marie, Anne, Imke and all the Ginnelly, and the extended family, neighbours and friends on your recent sad loss. There was no more talented man than Michael Joe. After his return to Bunnahowna Mulranny from London with his family he ran a successful Taxi Business as well as being a hardworking progressive farmer. He was a great hit of young and old. His disco run was legend as was his kindness to all including the travelling community in Castlebar. He was a gifted playwright of international renown. His literary talent was only equalled by his great kindness, humanity and passion for life, and his willingness to help community in any and every way he possibly could. I know this well from my own community involvement and my general election campaign in 2002. He was a director of the charity Safe Home Ireland (the National Repatriation Service for Ireland), and secretary up to very recently. Michael Joes’s beloved Theresa passed four years ago. Theresa and Ann Marie manufactured thousands upon thousands of St Brendan’s Brooms in Bunnahowna over the years to raise money for St Brendan’s Village Community Project, including the St Brendan’s High Support Unit. Michael Joe donated the complete proceeds of his novel Jackson which he wrote about his donkey, for St Brendan’s High Support Unit. Michael Joe is the Chairman of Mulranny Industrial Development Trust CLG a charity with the support of the local Cushlecka landowners which provided a facility to support enterprise in Mulranny and made the successful campaign for the Mulranny HSE West Mayo Ambulance Base a reality. Michael Joe was involved in the local Order of Malta and in the Mulranny Mediterranean Heather Festival, which brought my suitably rigged Achill yawl with cavemen and women and St Patrick, as a float to St Patrick Day Parades including the Dublin St Patrick’s Day Parade. Michael Joe was a man of considerable wit, much of it self- depreciating. He was a wonderful entertainer and singer. There was no better friend to his family, to St Brendans, or to his local community. Michael Joe will be greatly missed, but his great legacy will live on forever.
