Kathleen Devine (nee Doherty)

I met the Doherty family in the summer of 1971 when I went to Ireland with my roommate Una Doherty, one of Kathleen’s sisters. I stayed with the family at 25 Circular Road for 3 weeks and Una, Kathleen, Betty, and I took an overnight trip (I drove) along the Ring of Kerry and other places and stayed a night in Cork. The family welcomed me as one of their own and I have cherished the memories and all of family since. Una and I are still dear friends. I send my most sincere condolences and prayers to the Devine and Doherty families.

It’s so hard to know what to write to console people in a situation like this. I’m heartbroken for you all, the news of this tragedy was to say the least an awful shock. I went to college with Kathleen’s daughter Helen and through her met most of the family. The members of the Mayo Beekeepers Association are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic death of Kathleen Devine. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends and neighbours. Kathleen was a beautiful person, inside and out, and a role model for us all, as a friend, a beekeeper and member of our club. As a beekeeper she was second to none, producing lovely honey and winning well-deserved prizes at countless honey shows throughout the country. Kathleen loved her bees and beekeeping and it showed. She always had an open ear for the needs of others and often helped and mentored other beekeepers. Her kind-hearted presence will be missed by us all.
