It was with deep sadness that I learned on Friday last the sad news of Johns death RIP. My sincerest sympathy to Mary, Eoin, Brian, Mary Teresa and extended families at this very difficult time. John was a legend in his time, so full of local history, music and song, an Gaeilge beo agus cultur an oileain. I have such happy memories of my years teaching in Dooagh school with John and Mary and the wonderful atmosphere they created in the school for pupils and teachers alike. So sorry to hear of the passing of John (twin). He truly was an Achill legend and such an ardent Mayo supporter. He rang me on the landline several times over the years and he would express thanks for pronouncing our county the way it should be ….May-O ….with the strong emphasis on the ‘O’. He would say that too many people had got into the habit of rushing both syllables together and he was absolutely right on that. He had an enduring love for our native culture, language, sport and music, and was a mighty supporter of Scoil Acla. Midwest Radio was also a part of his life for more than three decades. John was ‘old stock’ and a blessing to Achill. Slán abhaile ar Shlí na fírinne, John.
