Liebe Martha, Liebe Sharon and all of yours – my deepest sympathy and also from my family is with you. Studeen my verry best Irish friend of my childhood is gone. I still remember this day in February 1947 as I went the first time outside Nallys house and I saw this young fellow peeping arond the corner of Nallys old house just to have a look at this youngster coming from this faraway Germany. So the next two years Studeen was my teacher in all things you have to know about Irish farm live. Studeen learned me to trap rabbit, and to hunt them with Studeens ferret, he told me all the hundred things you have to know on a farm. And I only could make him believe, that the Cologne tramways run by electricity. On rainy Sundays wo often sat up in the hay of Nally shed looking over to the lake and philosophing about the world around. A great fellow he was – dear old Studeen. Because of the Berlin Wall we where parted nearly over 40 years. As I came home to Mayo the first time after all the years Jack came to the car : “Herbert, where to hell where you all the time!” So I knew I was home again.
