There are fears that Mayo’s County Development plan will not address ongoing issues in the region such as unclean rivers, flooding land and overflowing septic tanks by the time it reaches the top table.
Westport-Belmullet Councillor John O’Malley made the point at this week’s meeting of Mayo County Council, saying there are bigger problems than those being discussed that must be addressed first.
The purpose of the Draft Variation No.2 of the Mayo County Development Plan is to update the Renewable Energy Strategy in order to align with policy at both national and European level.
However, Councillor O’Malley says other changes are needed in the document, such as the current restoration laws. The law, in line with European directives, is designed to repair degraded ecosystems such as rivers, boglands and urban areas.
He claims suitable funding isn’t in place for landowners to carry out these works, and questions why changes aren’t included in this document which will progress through the political system.
