The unauthorized and unregulated parking of camper vans and caravans along the Point at the Quay in Westport needs to be immediately addressed.
That’s according to the Cathaoirleach of Westport/ Belmullet Municipal District Peter Flynn.
The Cathaoirleach says he and his council colleagues having been calling on council management for a barrier that has been broken for months be restored, to prohibit the unauthorized entry along the Point, but to date it remains open and as a result, unregulated.
The issue is causing local discontent as there are no toilet facilties in the area and as a result have environmental consequences. In addition no revenue is being collected, while local hotels and camping facilities are faced with rising costs.

Midwest News has contacted Westport / Belmullet Muncipal council officials today to seek clarity on why the barrier and lock at the entrance to the area, that were erected by the local authority some years ago to regulate the situation, are no longer in operation.
We are awaiting a response.
