Mayo Roads Policing Unit carried out speed checkpoints on the N5 in Charlestown this week, detecting a number of motorists exceeding the 100 km/h limit.
A novice driver was found to be travelling at 150 km/h, resulting in a €160 fine and three penalty points.
Another novice driver was travelling at 138 km/h, and was handed the same penalty, with an additional €60 fine for not having a front number plate displayed.
Novice drivers are subject to a lower threshold of seven penalty points, with the accumulation of seven or more points in your first two years of driving resulting in a six month disqualification.
An Garda Síochána can now issued a fixed charge penalty notice for not having a front or rear number plate displayed along with them been non conforming or not distinguishable.
