Independent Ireland Agriculture Spokesperson deputy Michael Fitzmaurice has requested a meeting with Brittany Ferries to understand its reasons for its decision to withdraw its service for the transport of live cattle.
The announcement was made a few days ago and the Roscommon / Galway deputy is warning that Ireland’s livestock export trade cannot afford further barriers.
He says the development is the latest in a series of challenges facing Irish livestock exporters and warned that, as an island nation, Ireland must have reliable and fair access to markets across the European Union.
Deputy Fitzmaurice is calling on the government to act immediately rather than waiting until the problems become a crisis.
