TD criticises Government planning around listed buildings

A Mayo Deputy has criticised the current Government planning policy around listed buildings, following the decision to reject the redevelopment of the old bank building in Claremorris.

Paul Lawless TD says that the rejection of the redevelopment at Lower James Street is a “prime example of inconsistency, short-sightedness and self-defeating logic embedded in the current planning system”.

He wants local councillors to have more of a say on planning, particularly for buildings like this, and for a reform of the current policy.

Deputy Lawless says that the current policies guarantee that no one in their right mind will take on the financial burden of restoring a building like this.
