Taoiseach Micheál Martin continues his visit to Washington DC today with a number of meetings focused on trade today.

It comes after political engagements yesterday with the US administration.

As the dust settles on a fifty minute Oval Office performance the opinion on whether or not Micheál Martin did a good job depends on how high your expectations had been heading into it

On one level, he survived without any massive disaster or misstep and given the last appearance in the Oval was the Volodymyr Zelensky fiasco that’s an achievement in itself

On the other hand, he was quiet on Gaza, didn’t say a thing to defend the EU from a pummeling and when he did pipe up to address the trade imbalance Donald Trump dismissed much of what he said

Trump himself was like a smiling assassin – saying he was impressed by how Ireland had accumulated so much American investment, but also saying those days are over.

After politics yesterday trade is the focus today with a number of meetings on the cards for Micheál Martin before he attends the swanky, 1,000 dollar a plate Ireland Funds charity dinner this evening
