The Humanitarian Assistance Scheme (HAS) was introduced to provide financial compensation to those who had lost clothing, food or personal items as a result of the impact of Storm Éowyn, however many people who applied to the scheme have received rejection letters stating that the “financial support for these items is not covered under the HAS”.
Aontu deputy in Mayo Paul Lawless told the Taoiseach in the Dail this week that the application form itself said these items would be covered.
Deputy Lawless asked the Taoiseach for clarity on the controversial scheme, challenging the government on the promises they made and how so many people have been left short with no idea that the scheme closed suddenly, without any public notice.
In response, the Taoiseach, he says, advised that the scheme has been extended and has recognised the need for a more comprehensive bespoke scheme to deal with the aftermath of Storm Éowyn.
