If a local authority house was in the state of disrepair that St Joseph’s Rehabilitation and Stroke Unit is, at present, in the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar, it would be condemned.
That’s the view of Castlebar based Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne.
The councillor outlined to a recent meeting of the HSE West Forum the present state of this facility that provides vital rehab for patients recovering from strokes in this region.
He said the unit requires painting, repair of damaged windows and floor covering, decaying timber and the fixing of leaks.
In response, HSE management accepted that the the unit requires attention, and has committed to begin the upgrades early in the new year.
Councillor Kilcoyne spoke to Midwest News Editor Teresa O’Malley about the unacceptable state of a vital health facility.
