A new special education classroom for Scoil Íosa, Ballyhaunis, has been announced today as part of tranche 3 of the Department of Education’s 2026/27 special class programme.

Minister of State Alan Dillon has welcomed the announcement.

He says it follows the significant progress already made across the county through earlier tranches. With this latest approval, a total of 13 new special classes have now been sanctioned for Mayo schools for September 2026.

Special classrooms have also been approved for schools in Galway East, with Corrandrum National School, Tuam and Killeeneen National School, Athenry each approved for one new special class for the next academic year.

Welcoming the decision, Tuam based Minister Canney said the additional capacity will be of significant benefit to families in these areas.
