A primary school in west Sligo has been recognised among the best in the country for its work in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Owenbeg National School, located just outside Easkey, has been awarded the prestigious Curious Minds Platinum Award by Science Foundation Ireland in recognition of its outstanding commitment to STEM education.
The school is one of only 18 schools nationwide to receive the Platinum Award this year and is the only school in County Sligo to achieve the distinction.
The award recognises the efforts of pupils and staff who took part in a schoolwide sustainability project throughout the academic year. Through a range of science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities, students investigated environmental challenges and developed practical solutions while building valuable STEM skills.
School representatives said the award reflects the hard work, enthusiasm and creativity shown by the entire school community.
Speaking about the achievement, the school said it was “incredibly proud” to receive the recognition and to represent County Sligo at the highest level of the Curious Minds programme.
The Platinum Award is the highest level of recognition available through the Curious Minds initiative, which encourages schools across Ireland to engage pupils in hands-on STEM learning and scientific inquiry.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for Owenbeg National School and highlights the growing emphasis on sustainability and STEM education in schools across the region.
