Mayo county councillors have called on their colleagues on Sligo County Council to rescind the proposal to construct a greenway along the disused railway alignment between Bellaghy, outside Charlestown and Collooney, county Sligo.
The motion was proposed by Mayo Fianna Fail councillor Damien Ryan at yesterday’s monthly meeting of Mayo county council and was unanimously supported.
Irish Rail confirmed last week that it has agreed to facilitate a licence arrangement with Sligo County Council for the 35 km section of the former Western Rail Corridor for the development of the Sligo Greenway.
It’s generally understood, by the rail company and others that it will be decades before a train is restored on the disused train track.
However, Mayo county councillors disagree – they believe that that  timescale could be significantly reduced if government focus on delivering vital infrastructure in the region.
