Sinn Fein will put forward a motion to the Dail next Tuesday calling on the Government to block the Mercosur trade agreement from progressing.
It comes after thousands of farmers and supporters turned out for a national protest in Athlone yesterday against the deal to import beef from South American countries.
Sinn Fein Agriculture spokesperson Martin Kenny says the Government must contact MEPs to seek support to block the agreement.
The programme was discussed at an Oireachtas meeting on Thursday.
