The new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council will be chosen at the Annual General Meeting of the local authority this Friday.
It is expected that Belmullet based councillor Sean Carey will be selected as leader of the council for the next year.
This would see the Fianna Fáil cllr take over from Bonniconlon based Fine Gael cllr John O’Hara.
Following last year’s local elections, a pact was formed between the two larger parties, meaning that the office of Cathaoirleach will be shared over the five year term.
The position of Leas Cathaoirleach is expected to be taken up by a Fine Gael cllr, of which there are 11 – Jarlath Munnelly (Killala), Marie Therese Duffy (Ballina), Donna Sheridan (Castlebar), Cyril Burke (Castlebar), Ger Deere (Castlebar), Alma Gallagher (Ballyhaunis), Michael Burke (Ballinrobe), Neil Cruise (Foxford), Gerry Coyle (Geesala), Peter Flynn (Westport) and the aforementioned John O’Hara.
The AGM of Mayo County Council will take place on Friday at Áras an Chontae, while the positions of Cathaoirligh in the four municipal districts will also be filled in the next week.
