Overhanging trees shattered the front window of a school bus with students onboard outside Louisburgh this morning and thankfully no one was injured, according to local councillor Chris Maxwell.

The bus was travelling along the Kilsallagh to Louisburgh road when the incident occurred.

Just last week Mayo County Council workers had cut back trees along the same route, that were causing hazards for bus drivers and others since Storm Eowyn.

But councillor Maxwell says this particular tree had moved overnight, as the ground beneath the shrubbery is drying out  and is weakened after the storm, and continues to move in strong breezes.

The bus driver this morning, he says, took it on himself later to go back later with a chainsaw to cut down the overhanging branches.

However, the councillor says that presents its own risks, and he believes that a better solution to the ongoing problem is now needed.

He has called on Mayo County Council to work with landowners, not just in Louisburgh, but across the county to address a complex problem at this stage.

Cllr Maxwell has been speaking to Midwest News editor Teresa O’Malley about what happened today….
