A new survey has found that one in three secondary school students and more than one in five primary school students are refusing or avoiding school at least once a month.
The Barnardos survey of more than 700 parents found that anxiety was the most common reason given for school avoidance.
The research also found that almost half of parents said their children had missed school for non-medical reasons once or twice during the previous school year.
Meanwhile, more than half of parents of primary school children with special educational needs, and almost two-thirds of those at secondary level, said their child was receiving only some, or none, of the supports needed to fully engage in school.
