Rural taxi industry suffering due to apps

A Dáil committee has heard that taxi shortages in rural areas are leading to publicans having to drive customers home.

The Dáil Joint Committee on Transport heard on Wednesday from representatives of the taxi industry, where shortages and a lack of regulations were also discussed.

There were also speakers from the Restaurants Association of Ireland and the Vintners Federation of Ireland, who discussed how the state of the industry is affecting hospitality businesses.

The committee heard that rural taxi services are particularly affected by the rise and domination of taxi apps such as Free Now and Uber.
