Retrofitting buildings to be energy efficient in the rental sector would pose a financial challenge for many landlords.
That’s a key finding of an ESRI report which examines the energy efficiency status of rental buildings – and what it would take to improve them.
Cases vary substantially – but the ESRI estimates upgrading from a G to a B rating to be around €43,000 – and around €30,000 for C-rated properties ….. using 2023 prices.
It finds the total investment required by property owners to retrofit the rental sector to a B1 or B2 rating would range between 7 – or €8 billion euro.
It also points to a financial challenge for many household landlords in financing upgrades, if they wished to do so.
