Councillors have called on the Gardai and the local authority to deal with severe anti- social behaviour prevalent in some Castlebar Housing Estates.
The Castlebar councillors made the plea at yesterday’s monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District, held in Bellcarra community centre.
Councillor Michael Kilcoyne raised the issue after he and other councillors had received letters recently from residents associations in a number of housing estates in Castlebar town.
The letters outlined extensive shouting and arguing in some homes, intimidation of neighbours, fighting spilling out on the street and children attacked with sticks on green areas outside their homes. A petrol bomb is alleged to have been thrown at a house. These are just some of the problems outlined.
Some of the residents causing the disruption are tenants of Mayo County Council while others are in private estates with landlords receiving state payments for their tenants.
Mayo County Council officials say a code of practice is in place surrounding anti-social behaviour by tenants in social housing.
Councillor Kilcoyne insists it’s not being acted on quickly enough and called on the Gardai to be more active in prosecuting such unacceptable incidents.
