A rare silver chalice has gone on display at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life at Turlough Park, to mark Mayo’s historic All-Ireland senior football victory this summer.
The chalice was made by silversmith Edmund Johnson in 1897 and 1898.
It’s a replica of the famous Ardagh Chalice, which dates back to the eighth century and is regarded as one of the great treasures of the early Irish Church.
The design will be familiar to Mayo supporters, as the Sam Maguire Cup is modelled on the Ardagh Chalice.
The original Ardagh Chalice is on permanent display at the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street in Dublin.
The rare replica will now give visitors to Turlough Park the chance to see the historic design up close as Mayo celebrates its All-Ireland success.
Curator of the National Museum Noel Campebll has been talking about the process of getting the chalice to the museum with Midwest Radio’s Stephen Grealis….
