The Quiet Man museum in Cong has been designated a Treasure of European Film Culture, with a recognition ceremony taking place today.
The site now joins a global list alongside landmarks such as the Trevi fountain.
John Ford’s cinematic masterpiece was filmed in Cong in 1951, with stars including John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara and Victor McLaglen playing out their scenes in and around the Mayo village.
The film went on to earn seven nominations at the Academy Awards in 1952, winning two for Best Director and Best Cinematography.
An official plaque unveiling takes place on this afternoon at 4:30 at the Quiet Man Museum in Cong. Attendees will include four local villagers who extras in the movie and involved in the filming.
