The councillor says it was the government that encouraged people to make the applications.

Forms to make the applications were being widely distributed by government promising to compensate householders for food lost in large freezers, the expense of eating out, and so on, as a direct result of being without electricity or water for more than 5 days.

Councillor Reddington says he was contacted by 27 failed applicants in his locality yesterday outlining their  deep anger and frustration.

He says he more than understands the upset and is urging those refused to appeal the decisions.
