The appointment of a ‘Housing Czar’ to deal with the current housing crisis “abdicates” the Minister with responsibility for housing in the first place.

That’s the view of Sinn Féin TD Rose Conway-Walsh, as the Coalition Government plans to create the new office which, according to the Taoiseach, is aimed at removing roadblocks to housing construction.

The plans come as the Government looks set to miss housing targets for 2025.

Brendan McDonagh, the Chief Executive of the National Assets Management Agency (NAMA) has been identified by the Coalition as the person to head up the new office, with reports saying that his salary will come to some €430,000.

Erris Deputy Conway Walsh says that a “radical overhaul” of the housing system is needed, instead of this “absurd” appointment.
