Possible changes to local government revealed

“Mini cabinets”, the ability to level an overnight “tourist tax” and consider local property tax variations of up to 50% are among a number of potential changes coming to local government, according to the Irish Examiner.

The Association of Irish Local Government (AILG) has reportedly been shown a number of recommendations which could form part of the final report of the local democracy taskforce, which is due to be presented to government in the coming weeks.

The AILG is a representative body made up of city and county councillors from across the country’s 31 local authorities.

Local government in Ireland has often been described as the weakest in Europe, particularly since austerity-era cuts which led to the abolition of town councils.

Fianna Fáil Councillor for Tuam and AILG delegate Mary Hoade has been speaking to MidWest Radio’s Scott Stephens and she was asked from where these recommendations were coming from and if change for local government is coming down the line…
