Nitrogen fertiliser prices forecast to double

Nitrogen fertiliser prices are forecast to double by 2030 due to the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), that’s according to a story today in the Farmer’s Journal.

Irish farm incomes could fall by at least 12%, with fertiliser use expected to decline sharply.

A recently published German study predicts lower fertiliser imports and production across the EU as costs rise.

A new economic assessment warns that CBAM and the removal of carbon allowances for imported fertilisers will significantly increase input costs. Irish farmers are expected to cut nitrogen use by up to 30% in western regions, while EU fertiliser production could fall by 21% and imports by 37%.
