Minister of State Marian Harkin will launch an innovative new Transition Year Programme in Strokestown this Friday (11th April) .

Scoil Mhuire Strokestown Transition Year students are being offered fully funded Safe Pass course to encourage careers in construction by 2 leading local construction companies.

In an initiative aimed at inspiring young talent to pursue careers in construction, JF Hanley Ltd and Shannon Valley Ltd, both based in Co. Roscommon, are sponsoring a fully funded Safe Pass course for Transition Year students at Scoil Mhuire Strokestown.

It’s the brainchild of Project Manager Selina Galvin of JF Hanley Ltd, and is the first of its kind for the local community.

The cost of the Safe Pass and Manual Handling course, which is €205, can be a significant barrier for young people looking to enter the industry. By covering the full cost of the course for the Transition Year students, JF Hanley Ltd and Shannon Valley Ltd are removing this obstacle and opening the door for local youth to gain experience in construction. The hope is that many of these students will develop a lasting interest in the industry and see construction as a viable career option for the future.

The initiative could benefit up to 60,000 Transition Year students nationwide annually.
