A new state savings scheme is being proposed to help deliver affordable housing.
The Social Democrats say the Homes for Ireland Savings Account – or HISA – would offer savers higher rates of interest than banks and would be exempt from Dirt tax which is currently 33 per cent of all interest made.
According to the Irish Independent the Soc Dem’s are proposing the money saved in the new accounts is used for projects linked to the delivery of affordable housing.
