Ireland’s cattle herd is set to hit its lowest level in a decade.
Department of Agriculture figures show there were almost 290 thousand fewer cattle on Irish farms on March 1st when compared with March of last year.
It’s the 3rd year in a row that cattle numbers have fallen, with both dairy and suckler herds reducing.
The Irish Farmers Journal reports that confusion over the nitrates derogation, added restrictions on fertiliser, national climate targets and falling beef prices could all be partly to blame.
