Mayo TD and Minister of State, Alan Dillon, has welcomed progress on the long-awaited Mayo Sports Campus in Castlebar, with confirmation that the project will now form part of Mayo County Council’s strategic project delivery process.
The ambitious project, with an estimated overall cost of €12 million, is being supported through the Government’s Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund with €7.5 million in government funding secured to date.
Minister Dillon, who has championed this project over recent years, said, “the scale of this project requires careful planning, design and procurement. I look forward to continuing my support for Mayo County Council in its delivery. This will be a flagship facility for Castlebar and the wider region.”
The development is expected to undergo a revised Part 8 planning process, followed by the appointment of a consultant design team to guide the next phase.
Minister Dillon added, “Castlebar and Mayo desperately need a regional, state-of-the-art athletics track and hub combined with multi-use AstroTurf facilities catering for GAA, rugby, and soccer. This will be a game-changer for shared sporting infrastructure in the county.”
He acknowledged the key contributions of Mayo County Council officials, saying, “I want to commend Chief Executive Kevin Kelly and David Mellett Head of Castlebar MD for their continued support and commitment to advancing this transformative project. Their leadership is instrumental in bringing this vision to reality.”
The Mayo Sports Campus is set to become a major asset for athletes, sports clubs, and communities across the region, supporting health, wellbeing, and economic activity for years to come.
