A memo will go to Cabinet this morning detailing plans for Ireland’s first military radar system.
The roll out of the system is expected to be complete by 2028.
The Department of Foreign Affairs will enter into negotiations with four countries about providing a state of the art military radar system for the country.
The names of those four countries aren’t being released as they’re considered commercially sensitive.
The rollout of radar was recommended under the Commission on the defence forces and the technology will include three elements Land based Long Range Primary Radar; Ground Based Air Defence systems and; Maritime (ship-borne) Radar.
After the system is operational the State will be able to detect all aircraft moving through Irish airspace, including those with their transponders turned off.
