Galway County Council is due to co-opt Michael Regan to the council later today.
He will take up the vacated Fianna Fáil seat of Shane Curley, who has been elected to the Seanad.
This comes following a selection convention for the Loughrea Gort/ Kinvara area seat, which took place at the Loughrea Hotel last night.
Mr. Regan, who is a former councillor won the selection on the first count with 64 votes, defeating Fidelma Curley and Mark Larkin.
Figures from the Department show 1,400 fewer units were built than was hoped.
