He has described it as a “vanity project divorced from the reality facing families and businesses across the county”.

The development is set to be funded under a €12m long-term loan, voted through by councillors last month, that will also fund the construction of other capital projects in the county.

Councillors in favour of the refurbishment said that there are issues regarding accessibility and that it is among the most outdated local authority headquarters in the country.

Deputy Lawless is calling for the Public Accounts Committee to examine the proposal.
