Mayo County Council is to look at potential alternative sites for the location of circuses in Castlebar.
At the Monthly Meeting of Castlebar Municipal District councillors expressed grave concern over a site on Milebush Road, on the outskirts of the town, which has hosted circuses on a number of occasions over recent years.
The next circus is planned for Easter in the county town.
Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere has described the Milebush Road site as a ‘crazy’ and as a ‘totally unsuitable’ location for a circus or carnival.
Cllr Deere has again cited the military barracks, in the town centre, and in the ownership of the local authority, as the ideal venue to host a circus of a carnival, and has questioned why it is not on offer.
