Mayo woman who worked in White House dies

A Mayo native who worked under two US presidents will be laid to rest in Belcarra this Sunday.

Mary Bourke, who worked for both Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan during their times in the oval office, will be buried in Belcarra following her funeral in St. Anne’s Church which takes place on Sunday at 2:30 pm.

Ms. Bourke was born in Belcarra in 1944, before moving to the USA in 1955. Here, she studied in high school until her graduation in 1963, when she went on to work for the University of Notre Dame.

After this, she went on to work for the US press secretary in Gerald Ford’s administration, and worked across several departments during Ronald Reagan’s years in office.

Following her work in US government, Mary relocated to Virginia, where she had a successful career in real estate spanning over 30 years.

She maintained a lifelong connection with her native county, which she visited regularly throughout her life.
