Two Mayo TDs took part in a somewhat tense exchange in the Dáil yesterday (Thursday), as Minister of State at the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon answered parliamentary questions.
Aontú TD for Mayo Paul Lawless questioned Minister Dillon on the possibility of Ireland having to pay significant fines if EU climate obligations are not met.
Marie Donnelly, chairperson of the Climate Change Advisory Council, recently told the Budget Oversight Committee that Ireland missing its EU climate and energy targets could leave to a fine of between €3 billion and €26 billion.
At the end of the Dáil exchange, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O’Brien can be heard telling Deputy Lawless to “check out the facts”…
