A Mayo TD has welcomed the inclusion of Inshore Fishing Sector in the new task force on fishing set up to address the unprecedented challenges in fishing.
Sinn Fein TD Rose Conway Walsh says the recent quota deal at the EU Fisheries Council has highlighted how unfair decisions at the European level can have devastating consequences for our coastal towns and villages.
That makes it all the more important that inshore representatives are fully involved in the taskforce shaping the future of our fishing sector.
Deputy Conway-Walsh was speaking after taking part in a meeting of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs earlier this week with representatives from inshore fishing organisations, including the National Inshore Fishermen’s Association, where fishermen outlined the pressures facing their sector and the need for their direct involvement in shaping policy responses.
